Coach Ken Eriksen talks about a hitter’s first aim: To hit a ground ball and make it to first base while maintaining vision of the play.
After the hitter hits a ground ball and they know it’s not getting past the infield, the hitter runs straight towards the middle of first base and continues straight to an imaginary point several feet past first base (shown by a cone in this video). Once that player reaches that point, she then surveys the field and determines whether she can make it to second base, or if she should stick with first base.
