Two former college softball athletes chat with Natasha Watley about a hugely important aspect of sports that isn't always talked about: Mental health.
Athletes are often faced with constant pressures from school, sports performance and social activities. Trying to find a balance between the three can often lead to mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. In addition, it's often hard to share those struggles with coaches, mentors and teammates.
However, programs and coaches can help foster a safe environment for expressing feelings and working through concerns. De-stigmatizing discussions surrounding therapy and feeling safe seeking professional help is an integral part of building a successful program. Encourage your players to be open and honest with you about their feelings, emotions and struggles.
