Sammi Gyerman runs through a simple drill for slappers to train quick feet and getting out of the box fast. The purpose of this drill is to train players how to efficiently and quickly run to first following the cross-over step of the slap.
How it works: The player starts in the box in her cross-over step. When coach says go, she slaps the ball, drops the bat, and sprints to first base. The player should be focusing on getting a strong first step out of the box on her way to first. Reiterate to your players that the focus should be on footwork, not whether or not the ball is fair or foul.
Requirement: A bucket of balls, bat, and a tee.
