When athletes understand why they should do something, they’ll be more apt to put what you’re teaching them into action. For example, you might ask them, “Why are we throwing three bases ahead?” The answer: Because it’s an automatic double.
Once they learn to consider the why of a given situation, they’ll start to think about it before you even explain it. And that’s when coaching becomes fun.
