Amber Freeman shares her philosophy for training young hitters, which starts with nailing down the basics.
The important ingredients for developing a great swing are: Stance, hand path, contact point, extension through the ball, and the follow through. Start from the ground up with simple drills to break down the different parts. Once the athlete gains proficiency in the individual components of the swing, then the coach can start incorporating drills that utilize the entire swing.
Once the mechanics are there, then the coach can start talking about athlete mentality, performance and dealing with wins and losses. The most important thing as a coach is to keep stoking a love for the sport within your athletes.
