Dana Sorensen and Jono Green, co-owners at Symbiotic Training Center, offer a full explanation of how they assess every single athlete that comes into their center to test for mobility, strength and body control.
As a coach, the first thing you need to do before creating a program is to assess your athletes: how their body functions, if they have injuries, what their weaknesses and strengths are in the weight room and in mobility exercises, what their imbalances are, and what their goals and work ethic are.
Sorenson and Green go over some of the basics of an athlete's assessment: joint mobility (either hyper-mobility or hypo-mobility), core strength (which if weak can contribute to major back injuries), range of motion and potential stiffness from injury, and body and muscle control.
Creating your own assessment of your athletes or partnering with a trainer that can do so will heighten your players' performance, confidence and teach functional movement.
