Purpose: To train players to properly execute a sacrifice bunt.
How it works: With a sacrifice bunt, there are three key aspects you'll want to train, including a balanced body position, a barrel location at the top of the strike zone with a slight upward angle on the bat, and good plate coverage. Try these two simple drills that help players perfect these aspects.
Drill #1: A batter starts out on one knee, holding the bat out in front of her body in bunting position. The player executes the bunt as a coach tosses in balls. Starting in this posture takes the legs out of the equation, so the player can get comfortable placing the barrel in the correct position while contacting the ball.
Drill #2: A batter starts in an upright hitting position. Before the ball arrives, she drops down and taps her knee to the ground, then executes the bunt as a coach tosses in the ball.
Equipment: One or more players, a bat, a home plate, softballs, a coach and a field
