Purpose: To get players comfortable with diving.
How it works This series of diving drills trains players to catch and dive for balls without worrying about getting hit by the ball.
Basic drill: Player one starts on her knees in the grass. Player two stands behind player one. Player two tosses a tennis ball over player one's shoulder. Player one leans forward to catch the ball, then sprawls to complete the dive.
Progression 1: Player one starts on her knees in the grass. Player two tosses a tennis ball from the side of player one. Player one must dive forward to catch the ball.
Progression 2: Player one starts on her feet. Player two tosses a tennis ball from the side. Player one takes a few steps forward before catching the ball and diving.
Progression 3: Player one starts on her feet. A coach tosses a tennis ball from the side. Player one takes a few steps forward before catching the ball and diving.
Progression 4: Player one starts on her feet. A coach tosses a tennis ball from the side at a greater distance. Player one takes a few steps forward before catching the ball and diving. She then gets to her feet and throws the ball back to the coach.
Progression 5: Player one starts on her feet. A coach tosses a tennis ball from the side at a greater distance. Player one takes a few steps forward before catching the ball and diving. She then makes a throw from her knees, sending the ball back to the coach.
