Kirk Walker believes a coach’s job is to influence the momentum of the game as well as the offense. By focusing on momentum more than scoring runs, you could earn additional opportunities to pull ahead.
For example, you may try being more aggressive with your offensive strategy early in a game to generate momentum but more conservative later on. If you’re in a tied ballgame, however, you can’t be afraid of making a mistake. You’ve got to be aggressive because you may not get another chance to score. A well-thought-out approach can help you be smart about any risks you decide to take. Without a clear offensive strategy, you could begin to feel quite overwhelmed.
Every time Coach Walker is in the third base coach box, he’s working his offensive strategy. He’s thinking about the hitter, the current situation, the opportunities his team has, the advantages the defense is giving away, and how he wants the play to go. At the same time, he’s also considering who’s on deck and all the possible outcomes.
In the end, it comes down to momentum. Coaches need to trust their lineups and the knowledge of what their athletes do consistently and avoid relying on pure luck. Watch the video to learn more!
