Head coach of West Valley College, Vicky Piatt, talks about what makes her program special - and shows coaches how to effectively sell their program.
First, what does the school as a whole offer? Recruits aren’t just drawn to the athletic program; they need to feel secure and excited about the school as a whole. Is the school in nature, or in a metro city? What are its strongest academic programs? What sort of internship opportunities does the school offer?
Second, what does the athletics department offer? A program’s success largely hinges on the support it receives from the athletic department. Is the entire athletic community supportive of other teams? Does the athletic department support strong academics and provide resources to help athletes navigate time management?
Third, what is the softball program like? This is possibly the most important point to sell. Know what makes your team special (whether its work ethic, history of winning championships, team chemistry, fantastic coaching staff).
