The main job of an outfielder is to "deliver the package." In other words, she needs to get the ball from the outfield to where the play is happening as quickly as possible.
Making long, powerful throws that get to the infield in seconds requires mastery of the mechanics. Tune in as Coach Ken Eriksen covers the key aspects of throwing, including grip, spin, transition and footwork. He'll even share a fun song to help your players remember the basic movements of a good throw. To reinforce these skills, you'll also learn the two simple throwing drills outlined below.
Drill #1:
Purpose: To develop proper throwing mechanics.
How it works: A coach and an outfielder begin 5 feet apart. From a kneeling position, the coach one-bounces the ball to the player. The outfielder receives the ball into her glove, then transitions into her throwing motion using proper form.
Variation: When receiving the ball, the player starts with her glove hand behind her body.
Requirements: One player, a glove, balls, a coach and 5 feet of space
Drill #2:
Purpose: To develop proper throwing mechanics.
How it works: A coach and an outfielder stand 10 feet apart. The coach makes a fast, driven throw to the player to replicate a line drive. With the glove in front of her body, the player receives the ball into glove, then transitions into her throwing motion using proper form.
Variation: Alternate between throws that replicate ground balls and pop flys.
Requirements: One player, a glove, balls, a coach and 10 feet of space
So grab a pen and paper, then settle in for this insightful session from one of the best coaches in the country.
