When your pitcher steps on the mound, your outfielders need to take one step forward and direct their full attention to the batter. This is what UCLA's Kirk Walker calls stepping into the "circle of focus."
Between pitches, they can shift their attention to other things, such as communicating with teammates, anticipating the next play or thinking about the weather.
