After you’ve coached for a while, you may experience a tough season that makes you question your reasons for coaching. Skeeter Gentile has been through this, and her advice for getting back on track is to reflect on why you got into coaching in the first place.
At the end of a particularly rough season, Coach Gentile took some time away to reflect on her why and recenter herself. By doing so, she was able to recall that she became a coach to help mentor, support, and facilitate the growth of young athletes into strong, independent women. That reminder allowed her to resume coaching with a fresh outlook.
She believes if you’re worried about your win/loss record and how you’re being perceived by your bosses, players, and parents, you’re putting your attention is in the wrong place. Instead, think about what you’re going to do to impact the lives of your players and determine what positive adjustments you can make moving forward. Once you do that, the win/loss record will take care of itself.
