Hitters must be able to adjust to different pitch speeds so they can make contact at the right time and put a good swing on the ball. This simple drill gives players a chance to practice adjusting to various pitches.
Purpose: To practice adjustment of timing, load and rhythm when hitting.
How it works: A coach sets up behind a screen about 20 feet from a hitter at home. To begin the drill, the coach yells “Slow!” As the hitter prepares to swing, she adjusts her timing, load and rhythm for a slow pitch. For the next round, the coach yells “Fast!” This time the hitter adjusts her timing, load and rhythm for a fast pitch. The drill continues with the coach announcing the pitch speed, alternating between fast and slow pitches. The hitter adjusts each time for the pitch type announced by the coach.
Requirements: One player, a hitting screen, a bat, a home plate, balls, a coach and a field
