Throwing a player out is not a mystery, it’s just a math problem, says Deb Hartwig of JustSOFTBALL.
Here’s how to calculate it:
- Radar a player’s throw strength.
- Figure how fast her ball travels.
- Determine how far she’s throwing.
- Plug numbers into the math table to determine the time it takes her throw to reach the base.
When players look at the table, many will want to throw harder to get the ball to the base quicker. The table—and the math—show them how.

Is there a way to get a copy of that formula?
I love Deb!
