Effective baserunning comes down to one thing: being relaxed. To train his USA Softball National Team players on this skill, Head Coach Ken Eriksen focuses on 3 areas:
• Keeping eyes on the ball – Runners who know when to move are more relaxed and quicker to respond.
• Anticipating what will happen next – Relaxed runners make quicker decisions than tense ones. This allows them to react instantly to what the catcher or ball is doing.
• Using common sense – Teach runners multiple options for each play and let them decide how to respond. This reduces tension by promoting an attitude of “this is what I CAN do” versus “this is what I MUST do.”
