This intense catcher workout is great for conditioning while giving your catchers practice at retrieving pass balls. Watch to see how it’s done and learn how to add variations that make it even more challenging.
Pass ball drill
Purpose: To train catchers to retrieve and throw balls quickly.
How it works: Set up a net and place four balls across the front of it, each about 3 feet apart. A catcher sets up about 15 feet in front of the net in ready position with her back to the net. A coach also sets up about 18 feet away, facing the net in a crouch. To start the drill, the catcher sprints to the first ball on the left, slides in to retrieve it, and throws it to the coach. She then repeats this for the other three balls.
Variations: Increase the number of balls the catcher must retrieve. Include a penalty for errant throws, such as adding another ball for retrieval.
Requirements: One player, catcher gear, a net, a home plate, four balls, a coach and a field
